Traditional Leathersmithing

Philip and Grace are self-taught leatherworkers, following Japanese craftsmanship practice - with Grace trained in Clothing Studies and Philip in traditional leather shoe making.

Oak Bark Tanned in Devon

Leather is sourced from J&FJ Baker & Co, Britain's only remaining traditional oak bark tannery - using locally sourced hides treated on-site over a 15-month process.

Made from their home studio

Every Cowrice piece is handmade by Philip and Grace themselves, from their home studio in Bristol — nothing is outsourced or mass-produced.

"Do what you like to do with passion, and not to please the audience." - Philip & Grace from Cowrice Studio

SELF-TAUGHT LEATHERCRAFT

Cowrice is the creative partnership of Philip Lau and Grace Kwok, who have worked together for 20 years across mediums including lino printing, woodwork and photography.

Their leather workshop began in Hong Kong, where they ran it together for a decade before relocating to Bristol with their two daughters, continuing their craft under their own name, Cowrice Studio.

Self-taught in leatherwork and inspired by Japanese craftsmanship, Philip and Grace design with a focus on simplicity, form and everyday use - many pieces start life as their own daily essentials before becoming part of the collection.

Each accessory is hand-finished from their home studio using oak bark tanned leather from J&FJ Baker & Co, Britain's only remaining traditional tannery of its kind, and takes between one and three days to complete depending on style and size.
