Lou from KAN Studio

KAN Studio is an ethical, sustainable jewellery designed and handcrafted in East London, founded by self-taught jeweller Lou Cervantes. At the heart of the studio is a commitment to uniqueness and conscious living, encouraging a return to our true essence and a reconnection with creativity. Each piece is an invitation to celebrate individuality through meaningful design, viewing jewellery not just as an accessory, but as a ritualised way of life.

Originally from Mexico, Lou’s creative process is deeply rooted in her passion for the natural world - its organic forms, raw textures and inherent symbolism. Her approach is highly intuitive and spontaneous, often weaving elements from her own spiritual journey into her work.

By prioritising recycled and natural materials over mass-produced components, KAN studio challenges conventional jewellery standards. Through these different intuitive techniques and the use of rare, found materials, many pieces result in one-of-a-kind finishes that are impossible to replicate. Lou's aim is to offer more than just a brand; she provides a connection to the earth and the self - thoughtful, symbolic and always celebrating the beauty of the unique.

Where did the inspiration for your pieces on the C et C website come from?
ix chel collection is a letter to womanhood, the beauty of life and the symbolism of your divinity, there are a lot of spirals which have been my signature shape since I started in 2018, and other symbols that bring a sense of depth to each piece. The names are of goddesses and gods based in many different civilasations like the mayan, Sumerian, Egyptian and more.

How do you overcome creative lulls?
I used to get very frustrated in the past but I've learned to override the burnouts and just create life experiences that for sure will revive my creativity, going for nature walks practicing other crafts or hobbies like ceramics or painting, creativity comes up when you least expect it and usually when you’re living life and enjoying it so maybe we just need to do that more often.

What is your favourite material to work with and why?
I love brass ! Controversially a lot of people dislike it but I think its a beautiful metal and way more affordable. It needs proper care but can last forever if loved right.

Do you have other projects in the pipeline?
I'd love to expand the brand to more shops , sell in different countries so that’s on the horizon, potentially Paris and Mexico so far.
Creating a new collection very soon also!

What are you reading at the moment?
A thousand splendid suns!
