Each piece is wheel thrown and finished by hand in Sophie's East Anglian studio, using traditional pottery techniques.

Clay offcuts and glaze are reused wherever possible, keeping waste to a minimum in Sophie's studio.

WHEEL THROWING
Wheel throwing is a traditional pottery technique where clay is centred on a spinning wheel and shaped by hand using gentle, controlled pressure. Sophie works the stoneware clay upward and outward, pulling the walls into shape before adding a hand-pulled handle and thumbed detailing.
Because each piece is shaped entirely by hand rather than cast from a mould, no two pieces come out identical. Small variations in form and the marks left by the maker's fingers are part of the character - a record of the making process, rather than a flaw to disguise.

Sophie is an East Anglian based potter making functional wares such as mugs, plates and vases using warm-toned stoneware clay.
